Note:

If necessary, adjust the valve clearance.

Adjustment of thermal clearances in Toyota-Camry engine valves

1. Remove the adjusting washer.

2. Rotate the camshaft so that the top of the cam points up. Position the valve tappet as shown in the illustration.

NOTE:

Use special tools 09248-05410 (A) and 09248-05420 (B).

3. Using the special tool (A), press down on the follower and place the special tool (B) between the camshaft and the follower. Remove the special tool (A). Insert the special tool (B) at a slight angle and make sure that the markings on the special tool are as shown in the illustration.

Note:

If the special tool (B) is inserted too deeply, the adjusting washer may jam it. To prevent this, insert it from the side of the intake valves at a slight angle.

4. Remove the shim with a small screwdriver and magnetic bar.

5. Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim and size the new shim.

6. Calculate the thickness of the new shim so that the valve clearance is within the specified values:

the thickness of the removed adjusting washer - T;
measured thermal clearance of valves - A;
new shim thickness - N.

11MZ-FE:

inlet - N = T + (A - 0.2 mm);
outlet - N = T + (A - 0.3 mm).

7. Select a new shim with a thickness that is as close to the design as possible.

8. Install a new shim in the follower with the embossed number on the washer facing down. Using the special tool (A), press down the push rod and remove the special tool (B).

9. Recheck the valve drive clearance. Remove the old sealing material and apply sealant to the cylinder head in the locations shown in the illustration.
