Parts and consumables:
- Coolant (VW TL-774G, G12++)
- Distilled water (in some cases)
Notes:
To properly check the coolant level, the vehicle must be positioned on a level surface.
1. Open the car hood as described in this article. The Volkswagen LT expansion tank is located on the left side of the engine compartment.
Warning:
Do not open the hood if you see steam or coolant coming out from under it, as you could get burned! Wait until steam or coolant stops escaping.
2. Check the fluid level in the expansion tank.
Note:
When the engine is cold, the coolant level in the reservoir should be above the "MIN" mark. Depending on the design of the tank, the maximum liquid level is not always indicated on it. Approximately, it should be no more than a couple of centimeters above the central rib of the tank.
3. If the liquid is below the minimum required level, open the reservoir cap.
Warning:
Do not unscrew the cap of the expansion tank when the engine is hot! The system is under pressure.
4. Add the required amount of coolant.
Note:
Use only high quality coolant recommended by the manufacturer. Do not mix different types of liquids. If there is no suitable type (G12 ABD) at hand, add distilled water. It is necessary to take into account the ratio of antifreeze and distilled water, since adding water increases the freezing point of the system.

5. After topping up the liquid, screw the cap tightly in a clockwise direction. The Volkswagen LT expansion tank cap must be tightly closed.
Note:
In case of significant loss of coolant, the causes of the leak must first be identified and eliminated. In case of large losses of fluid, it should be added only when the engine is cold to avoid damage to the engine.
