Toyota Corolla cars are equipped with electric power steering and rack and pinion steering. The steering of the car consists of a steering wheel, a steering column equipped with an electric power steering, a steering mechanism and two steering rods connected by ball joints to the steering knuckles of the front suspension.

Picture 1

Steering wheel with driver's airbag. In the central lining of the steering wheel there is a button for turning on the sound signal, in the variant design, on the left spoke of the steering wheel, there is a block of keys for controlling the audio system, and on the right - for a telephone and a speed limiter. The steering wheel hub is attached to the steering column shaft with a nut.

NOTE

On vehicles with a robotic transmission, the steering wheel has manual shift levers.

The steering column is safety, adjustable in height and reach, equipped with an anti-theft device in the ignition lock that blocks the steering wheel shaft. The intermediate steering shaft is connected to the steering gear shaft by a cardan joint. The steering column also houses the controls for the headlights, direction indicators, washer and windshield wiper.

The steering mechanism is installed in the engine compartment. Carter 9 of the steering mechanism is fixed on the subframe of the front suspension.

The electric power steering is installed on the steering column in the passenger compartment.

The electronic control unit (ECU) of the electric power steering determines the direction and amount of additional force, depending on the vehicle speed signals and signals from the torque sensor built into the steering column. As a result, the ECU adjusts the steering effort so that it is greater when driving at high speed and less when driving at low speed.

Tie rods 2 and 7 in Figure 4 are attached to the steering rack with 9 ball joints. Tie rod ends 1 and 6 are attached to the steering knuckle arms of the front suspension using ball joints. From turning in the tip, the steering rod is fixed with a nut. By rotating the steering rod in the ball joint relative to the tip, the toe-in of the steered wheels is adjusted.
