  • You will need: ruler, caliper, chalk (or wire) for marking, tape.
  • With an increased free play of the steering wheel, it is difficult to control the car, as it responds to the driver's actions with a delay. In addition, an increased stroke that cannot be eliminated by adjusting the steering gear indicates a malfunction of the steering (weakening of the steering gear, steering rods or wear of their parts).
  • The play must not exceed 9°. You can also determine the backlash in linear units (mm) by the formula L = (9 ° / 360 °)? D, where L is the steering wheel play, mm; ? = 3.14; D - outer diameter of the steering wheel, mm. The play must not exceed 30 mm.
  • 1. Check steering wheel play with the vehicle on a level, non-slip surface. Set the front wheels to a straight ahead position.
  • 2. Fix the ruler on the instrument panel so that its end touches the outer surface of the steering wheel rim.
  • 3. Without changing the position of the ruler, turn the steering wheel to the right until the front wheels begin to turn
  • 4. Mark the steering wheel rim in this position (attach the wire).
  • 5. Without changing the position of the ruler, turn the steering wheel to the left until the front wheels begin to turn.
  • 6. In this position, put a second mark on the steering wheel rim (fix the wire).
  • 7. Measure the distance between the marks along the rim. It should not exceed the calculated value.
  • 8. If the distance (steering wheel free play) is more than 30 mm, the cause must be found and corrected.
