Parts and consumables:

  • Engine oil (5w40, 5w30)
  • rags

Notes:

When measuring the oil level, the vehicle must be positioned on a flat, level surface. If the engine is at operating temperature, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain into the crankcase.

A complete oil change in the engine is carried out with a frequency of 16,000 km. The approximate volume of oil in a Volkswagen LT engine is about 8 liters.

1.  Open the hood as described in  this  article. The oil level indicator (dipstick) and the oil filler are located in the center of the engine compartment.

2.  Pull the dipstick out of the tube. Wipe it off with a lint-free cloth or rag.

3.  Insert the dipstick back into the receiving tube until it stops. Pull the dipstick out again and inspect its tip.

The areas where the oil level reaches are indicated by letter markers, which indicate:

  • A - no need to add oil
  • B - you can add oil; after that, it may turn out that the level is in zone "C"
  • C - it is necessary to add oil; it is enough that the level is in zone "B".

Note:

It must be taken into account that if the measurement is made "cold", then the oil level on the dipstick will not be representative and an adjustment in the definition of zones is required. Zone "C" can be quite normal for a cold engine and, when heated, the oil level will move into an acceptable zone "B". Do not rush to add oil in this case.

When the load is increased (for example, long motorway driving in the summer, towing a trailer or driving in mountainous areas), it is necessary to keep the oil level in zone "A", but not higher.

4.  If the measured oil level indicates the need for topping up, first wipe with a rag and open the oil filler cap.

5.  Add oil in small portions, periodically checking the level reached in the crankcase with a dipstick.

Warning:

Use only engine oil recommended by the manufacturer. Do not mix different types of oils or oils from different manufacturers, this can lead to a rapid loss of lubricating properties and increased wear of engine parts.
