Hyundai Matrix Automatic Transmission

Checking the oil level (ATF) in automatic transmission

1. Drive the car until the oil (ATF) in the gearbox reaches normal operating temperature (70–80°C).

2. Install the car on a flat horizontal platform.

3. Press the brake pedal and move the automatic transmission selector lever sequentially through all positions (holding it in each of them for several seconds) to fill with oil (ATF) the entire automatic transmission control hydraulic system and automatic transmission torque converter, and then set the selector lever to the “N” position .

4. Before removing the oil dipstick, clean the area around it from dirt. Remove the dipstick and check the condition of the gearbox oil (ATF).

Notes:

If the oil (ATF) in the automatic transmission has a burnt smell, then this is a sign of contamination with small particles of wear on the friction linings of the gearbox controls. In this case, it may be necessary to overhaul the gearbox.

Automatic transmission oil (ATF): GENUINE HYUNDAI ATF SP-II M. Normal automatic transmission oil (ATF) level should be in the "HOT" range of the dipstick. If the level is lower than specified, add automatic transmission oil (ATF) to the correct level.

If the oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission is below normal, then the oil pump will trap oil along with air, which will lead to the formation of bubbles and foaming of the oil in the hydraulic system. This will reduce the working pressure in the hydraulic control system, which in turn will lead to a delay in gear shifting (late engagement of gears) and slipping of the friction clutches or brakes. If the oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission is higher than normal, then due to the rotation of the gears of the planetary mechanisms, abundant foaming of the oil (ATF) will occur, which will lead to the same consequences as in the case of a low oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission. In both cases, air bubbles cause overheating, oil oxidation (ATF) and varnish deposits that damage valves, clutches and actuators.

In the case of an overhaul of an automatic transmission or vehicle operation in difficult road conditions, an automatic transmission oil (ATF) and oil filter change is mandatory. The procedure for changing the automatic transmission oil (ATF) is described below. It must be remembered that only special oil filters are used in automatic transmissions.

5. Firmly insert the oil dipstick into the standard hole.

Automatic transmission oil change (ATF)

Notes:

You can use the installation for quick oil change (ATF) in automatic transmission (ATF fluid charger). If there is no such setting, change the oil (ATF) in the automatic transmission, as described below.

1. Draining oil (ATF) from the automatic transmission hydraulic system:

– Disconnect the hose that connects the gearbox to the oil cooler located inside the engine cooling radiator;

– Start the engine and let the oil (ATF) drain through the hose.

Operation conditions:

– the engine is idling;

– the automatic transmission selector lever is in the “N” position.

Attention:

One minute after starting, the engine must be turned off. If all the oil (ATF) has flowed out before this point, then the engine must be turned off immediately .

2. Install the drain plug with gasket in place and tighten the plug to 32 Nm. Remove the drain plug on the bottom of the automatic transmission case and drain the oil (ATF) from the automatic transmission oil pan.

3 . Pour new automatic transmission oil (ATF) through the automatic transmission oil filler pipe.

Replace external transmission oil filter. In case of significant oil contamination (ATF), check the condition of the automatic transmission internal oil filter.

Attention:

If the nominal amount of automatic transmission oil (ATF) is not included in the transmission, stop filling.

Note:

Check for contamination in the drained oil (ATF). If the automatic transmission is filled with oil (ATF) more than the nominal volume, let the oil drain from the gearbox again.

4. Connect the automatic transmission oil cooler hose and securely reinstall the oil dipstick. Before installing the automatic transmission oil dipstick, clean the area around it of dirt. Fill in new automatic transmission fluid (ATF) through the automatic transmission oil filler pipe.

5. Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.

6. Move the automatic transmission selector lever sequentially through all positions and then set it to the “N” position.

7. Make sure that the automatic transmission oil (ATF) level is in the "COLD" range ("cold automatic transmission") of the oil dipstick. If the level is lower than specified, add the required amount of automatic transmission oil (ATF).

8. Drive the car for a certain distance so that the oil temperature (ATF) reaches the normal operating value (70–80 ° C), then again check the oil level in the automatic transmission (ATF), which should be in the “HOT” range (“warmed automatic transmission ").

9. Firmly install the oil dipstick into the automatic transmission oil filler pipe.

Replacing the automatic transmission oil filter

1. Remove the air filter assembly, then use the special tool (oil filter chain wrench, etc.) to remove the automatic transmission oil filter.

2. After removing the filter, use cloth gloves or rags to clean the surface of the gearbox from splashes of automatic transmission oil (ATF), dirt, etc.

3. Clean the mounting surface of the automatic transmission oil filter.

4. Lubricate a small amount of clean automatic transmission oil (ATF) on the O-ring surface of the automatic transmission oil filter.

5. Reinstall the automatic transmission oil filter.

Tightening torque: 11–13 Nm.

6. Check the level of automatic transmission oil (ATF) in the gearbox.
