You will need: all the tools necessary to remove the timing belt (see Replacing the timing belt for engines Z 16 XER, Z 18 XER, Z 20 LER and Z 20 LEH), gearbox (see Removing and installing the gearbox) , clutch (see Removing and installing clutch), flywheel (see Removing, troubleshooting and installing flywheel), as well as a screwdriver and a hammer.

Note:

If traces of oil leakage are found through the crankshaft oil seals, first check if the crankcase ventilation system is clogged and its hoses are not pinched, if necessary, repair the malfunctions. If the oil continues to flow, replace the oil seals.

Signs of the need to replace the front crankshaft oil seal Opel Astra

An indication of the need to replace the front crankshaft oil seal for the Opel Astra is an oil leak through its edge. In this case, oil is sprayed by the rotating crankshaft pulley, as a result of which the entire front part of the engine and the timing belt are oily.

The reasons for the oiling of the clutch discs can be the leakage of the oil seal of the input shaft of the gearbox or the rear oil seal of the crankshaft.

Engine and transmission oils have a different smell, so with a certain skill, you can use it to determine which of the oil seals is defective.

Useful advice:

There is another way to determine the type of oil. Drop the oil into the water poured into the vessel in a thin layer (you can put it in a puddle). The transmission oil will spread over the entire surface of the water in the form of an iridescent film, while the engine oil will remain in the form of a drop, similar to a grain of lentils.

Replacing the front crankshaft oil seal Opel Astra

1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the storage battery.

2. Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke (see Setting the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke).

3. Remove the timing belt (see "Replacing the timing belt for engines Z 16 XER, Z 18 XER, Z 20 LER and Z 20 LEH"), camshafts (see Removing, troubleshooting and installing camshafts).

4. Remove the crankshaft toothed pulley.

5. Remove the key from the crankshaft toe groove.

6. Using a screwdriver or wire hook, remove the oil seal from the oil pump housing.

7. Lubricate the working edge of the new oil seal with engine oil, install it in the oil pump housing, orienting the working edge towards the inside of the engine, and press the oil seal into the pump housing until it stops using a mandrel. The mandrel can be a socket from a set of tools of the appropriate size or an old stuffing box.

8. Install all removed parts and assemblies of the timing mechanism in the reverse order of removal.

9. Adjust the tension of the timing belt (see "Replacing the timing belt for engines Z 16 XER, Z 18 XER, Z 20 LER and Z 20 LEH") and the accessory drive belt.

Replacing the rear crankshaft oil seal Opel Astra

1. Remove the transmission (see "Removal and installation of the transmission").

2. Remove the clutch (see "Removing and installing the clutch").

3. Remove the flywheel (see "Removal, Troubleshooting and Flywheel Installation").

4. Remove the oil sump.

5. Remove the screw that secures the crankshaft position sensor.

6. Remove the sensor.

7. Remove the reference disk of the crankshaft position sensor.

8. Remove the two bolts securing the crankshaft main bearing cap.

9. Remove the cover.

10. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal from the holder.

11. Lubricate the lip of the new oil seal with engine oil.

12. To avoid damaging the lip of the rear oil seal, install the oil seal using an appropriate size mandrel.

13. Install the removed assemblies and parts in the reverse order of removal.

Note:

  • When installing a flywheel on an Opel Astra, lubricate the threaded part of its mounting bolts with an anaerobic thread lock and tighten them evenly crosswise.
