Note:
The Nissan Almera Classic can be fitted with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
Manual Transmission
Operate a manual transmission according to the shift pattern printed on the handle of its lever. In neutral mode, the lever is automatically set to the 3rd or 4th gear position, from which it can be moved forward or backward respectively. To engage 1st or 2nd gear, move the lever to the left as far as it will go and then move forward or backward respectively. To engage V gear, move the lever to the right as far as it will go and forward.
To engage reverse gear, move the lever all the way to the right and then back.
Note:
To engage the reverse gear after the 5th gear, first move the lever to the neutral position. Engage reverse gear immediately after V gear, bypassing the neutral position, blocking will not allow.
Warning:
Engage reverse gear only when the vehicle is completely stopped. To avoid damage to the transmission, avoid shifting when the wheels are slipping.
Automatic transmission
The automatic transmission has four forward gears and one reverse gear. Each gear is engaged automatically depending on the position of the gear selector lever, vehicle speed and accelerator pedal position.
The selector lever is located on the floor tunnel in the same place as the manual transmission control lever. The floor tunnel trim has a gearshift mode scale as shown in the figure below. In the upper left corner of the pad there is a button for unlocking the lever. A slot is made in the overlay of the floor tunnel for moving the selector lever.
Automatic transmission selector lever:
1 - lever handle;
2 - slot for moving the lever;
3 - scale of modes of operation of the gearbox;
4 - lever release button.
Designations of the scale of operating modes:
1 - "P" - parking. In this position, the transmission is locked to prevent the parked vehicle from moving. If the selector lever is in this position, the engine can be started;
2 - "R" - reverse. In this selector lever position, the vehicle moves backward. Move the lever to this position only when the car is completely stopped;
3 - "N" - neutral. In this position of the lever, no gear is engaged. The neutral position is used during long stops, for example, in traffic jams.
4 - "D" - forward movement. This is the main position of the selector lever, in which it is most of the time when driving, and the transmission control system selects the gear that is optimal for a given speed and acceleration of the car.
5 - "3" - from I to III gear. When this mode is enabled, the gearbox will use gears I to III. Use this mode when driving in hilly or mountainous areas. When driving downhill, there may be a slight effect of engine braking.
6 - "2" - from I to II gear. When this mode is enabled, only I and II gears will be used in the gearbox. Use this mode when driving in hilly or mountainous areas. It generates more torque to the wheels when driving uphill and more effective engine braking when driving downhill.
7 - "1" - I transfer. Only 1st gear is used. Use this mode when driving in hilly or mountainous areas. In this case, the most effective engine braking is provided.
Note:
To move the selector lever from the “P” (parking) position to the “R” (reverse) position, press the brake pedal.
To activate the "D" mode, move the lever to the position indicated by the symbol "D / Z", and then to the left side of the slot in the floor tunnel overlay. To enable mode "3", move the selector lever to the right. The remaining modes of operation of the automatic transmission are switched on by moving the lever up or down along the winding slot.
Fully depressing the accelerator pedal with the gear selector lever in D, 3, or 2 positions will automatically shift into a lower gear, allowing the vehicle to accelerate rapidly. This mode is called "kick-down". Use it for overtaking or hard acceleration of the car.
If the gear selector lever cannot be moved from the “P” position to other positions with a discharged battery, press the lever release button and move it to the desired position.
Warning:
Never move the selector lever to the "P" (parking) or "R" (reverse) position while the car is moving! This will damage the gearbox. A special locking device will not allow the selector lever to be moved from the “P” (parking) position to any other position if the brake pedal is not held down.
Never move the selector lever to the "N" (neutral) position while the vehicle is moving! In doing so, you can accidentally move the lever to the "P" (parking) or "R" (reverse) position, which will lead to damage to the gearbox. In addition, engine braking will become impossible.
When the selector lever is set to position “1” or “2”, it is forbidden to exceed the vehicle speed of 50 and 85 km/h, respectively.
Helpful Hints:
To maintain control of the vehicle, keep your foot on the brake pedal or lift the parking brake lever when the lever is in the "N" (Neutral) position and also when moving the lever to this position. If the car is on a slope, then when starting the engine, the selector lever must be set to the "P" (parking) position, and not "N" (neutral).
When driving on slippery roads covered with snow or ice, turn on the "Snow" mode of the transmission by pressing the button located at the top of the center console of the instrument panel. In this mode, the car moves off in 2nd gear and the engine torque is delivered to the wheels more smoothly.
