Tools:  all tools necessary to remove the accessory drive belts and timing gear, right power unit suspension support, as well as a TORX TZ0 wrench and a TORX E12 socket, a torque wrench.

Parts and consumables: rags, cloth gloves, empty container for draining the liquid, coolant, rubber o-ring for the water distribution pipe, oil pump gasket.

Note:

The oil pump of an Opel Astra car is removed for replacement when its supply decreases, causing a constant drop in oil pressure in the engine lubrication system, as well as when oil leaks through the sealing of the mating surfaces of the pump housing and cylinder block. Only the pump assembly is supplied as spare parts, therefore, the article describes only the removal and installation of the pump.

The work is shown on the example of the Z16XER engine; on other engines, the pump is removed in almost the same way. The difference lies in the need to additionally remove the oil sump (see Replacing the oil sump seal) .

To gain access to the oil receiver mount, the Z16XER engine does not have a removable oil receiver, since its elements are made directly in the oil sump housing, connected by a channel to the pump, and the rear cover of the timing gear drive (the Z16XER engine does not need to remove this cover when removing the oil pump) .

Removal and installation of the oil pump Opel Astra H

1. Disconnect a wire from the minus plug of the storage battery.

2. Drain the liquid from the cooling system (see Replacing the coolant).

3. Remove the accessory drive belt (see Replacing the accessory drive belt).

4. Remove the right support of a suspension bracket of the power unit.

5. Remove the engine mount bracket (see Replacing the Power Unit Suspension Mounts).

6. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

7. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.

8. Remove the lower timing cover (see Replacing the timing belt).

9. Remove the intermediate roller of the timing belt by unscrewing the bolt of its fastening.

10. Remove the timing belt.

Warning:

After removing the timing belt of the Opel Astra car, it is forbidden to turn the crankshaft and camshafts, as the valves may be damaged by the pistons.

11. Remove the tension roller of the timing belt by unscrewing the bolt of its fastening (see "Replacing the timing belt").

12. Remove the toothed pulley from the crankshaft shank.

13. Turn out 2 bolts of fastening of a water distribution pipe to the water pump.

Note:

For clarity, the collector has been removed.

Warning:

The flange of the water distribution pipe is sealed with a rubber ring. Replace this ring each time the joint is disassembled.

14. Turn out 3 bolts of fastening of an oil crankcase to the oil pump.

15. Turn out 9 bolts of fastening of the oil pump to the block of cylinders of the engine.

Notes:

Please note: the oil pump mounting bolts vary in length (bolts A are short, bolts B are long).

For clarity, shown on the removed engine.

16. Remove the oil pump assembly with the water pump.

Note:

For clarity, also shown on the removed engine.

17. Remove the sealing gasket installed under the flange of the oil pump housing.

Note:

Replace the oil pump gasket with a new one each time the connection is disassembled, since the old gasket may not ensure the tightness of the connection when reinstalled.

Useful advice:

Every time the pump is removed, replace the front crankshaft oil seal.

18. Install the pump in the reverse order of removal, and tighten the bolts of its fastening evenly crosswise to a torque of 20 N m (2.0 kgf m).

19. Install all previously removed parts and fill in the coolant (see "Replacing the coolant").

Useful advice:

When installing a new oil pump, we recommend replacing the oil filter element.
