How often to change gear oil?

The manufacturer has determined that the gear oil does not need to be changed. It is calculated for the entire period of use of the vehicle. But not a single liquid has the ability to maintain its qualities for a long time and not lose them. Therefore, the replacement definitely needs to be carried out in the region of 50-60 thousand km. mileage, while remembering that every 15 thousand km. it is necessary to carry out fluid diagnostics (1 time in 5 years). If the transport is operated in difficult conditions, trailer operation and frequent loads, then the interval is reduced by 1.5-2 times. 

Methods for replacing the transmission fluid:

• Complete replacement:  performed at an official service using special equipment. The gearbox of the car is completely washed from dirt deposits, the used old fluid is drained and replaced with a new one. More financially expensive procedure, but effective.
• Partial oil change for automatic transmission Mazda 5:  only half of the new oil is added to the previously filled old oil. This method is used with a small car mileage, when the oil still retains its properties and mixing both oils is quite acceptable. If the oil is in good condition, its color should be light, and the smell of burning should be completely absent. Over time, the transmission fluid in the box loses its physical and chemical properties, gradually accumulating combustion and friction products. Therefore, a complete pumping out of the old fluid is necessary, and not partial.

What kind of oil to fill in Mazda 5?

To replace the fluid, the manufacturer uses the original  MAZDA ATF MV oil.

Do not, under any circumstances, mix oils from different manufacturers!  Since it is not possible to completely drain all the oil during self-replacement, the new one mixes with the old one, which, in turn, contributes to the precipitation, curtailment of different types of oils and additives, and failure of the box itself.

Note:

Motorists make an independent replacement 2-3 times in a row (with an interval of 1 thousand km.). 1.  Warm up the engine to a temperature of at least 70 ° C and drive a car for several kilometers. This will contribute to a more active draining of the old fluid from the automatic transmission. 

2.  Place the machine on a lift, pit or overpass. Go down under the car and inspect its bottom.

3.  Turn away bolts of fastening of a mudguard of a motor compartment. Using a flat screwdriver, pull out the fastening clips, and remove the shield.

This will open access to the gearbox.

4.  Place a prepared empty container with a capacity of at least 7 liters under the GB drain hole.

5.  Unscrew the drain plug with an 8 hexagon. 

6.  Drain the oil completely and put the container aside.

7.  Clean the threads of the plug and replace its copper ring.

8.  Tighten the drain plug tightly.

9. Using a 10 socket, remove the 20 pan mounting bolts.

10.  The pallet is also attached to the box with sealant. Take a sharp knife or flat spatula, and gently pry the pan off. But be careful not to bend or scratch the metal.

Warning:

There will still be some liquid left in the middle of the box, and when the tray is removed, it may spill over you.

11.  Put it aside. 

12.  A Mazda 5 automatic transmission filter is installed between the internal mechanisms of the box and the pallet.

13.  Disconnect the oil temperature sensor from it.

14.  Slowly pull the filter element towards you and remove.

Note:

Be careful:  when removing the element, a sufficient amount of gear oil flows out! 

15.  Check for the presence of an o-ring on the neck of the new element. 

16.  Replace the Mazda 5 filter with a new one. Set it in place.

17.  Reconnect the oil temperature sensor.

Note:

It is not recommended to install the used filter back, as over time a sufficient amount of sediment and mechanical inclusions accumulate in its middle.

18.  Remove the old sealant from the removed pallet. Be careful not to damage or scratch it.

19. Rinse the sump and remove all blockages. 

20.  A magnet is installed at the bottom of the automatic transmission pan.

Be sure to take it out and clean it well.

21.  Apply a thin layer of new sealant to the sump. Give it some time to dry.

22.  Degrease the mating surface of the gearbox.

23.  Replace the pallet and fix it with bolts. Remove excess sealant.

24.  Go to the engine compartment. Next, you will need to fill in new fluid.

25. Mazda 5 automatic transmission oil is poured through the dipstick hole.

26.  Pull the Mazda 5 oil dipstick out of the hole. 

27.  Insert a funnel into its hole. 

28. Fill with fresh fluid to the maximum level. 

Note:

Add transmission fluid slowly:  if too little or too much oil is added, this will adversely affect the performance of the automatic transmission.

29. Start the engine, and gradually move the  selector to different positions from  P to D. Return selector to P mode . 

30.  Using a dipstick, measure the oil level in the Mazda 5 automatic transmission. When the engine is warm, it should be in the middle of the sector, on the side of the indicator marked  65 ° C.

31.  Add oil if necessary. 

Independent determination of the state of automatic transmission oil:

1.  Take a small blank white sheet of paper, a napkin or a white cloth.

2.  Pull out the oil dipstick and apply a few drops of oil to the paper.

3.  Determine the color of the liquid:

• transparent pink shade - the liquid is in a normal state, and its replacement is not needed;
• gray color, maybe still transparent or slightly cloudy - soon you will have to change the oil;
• dark color, opaque, there may be a burning smell - fluid replacement is already necessary.
