Do I need an automatic transmission oil change Mazda 6

The manufacturer has determined that the automatic transmission fluid does not need to be replaced, and is designed for the entire period of use of the vehicle. However, some owners of this model do not agree with this and believe that by 60-75 thousand km. run, the oil begins to change its color (becomes darker), and loses its qualities.

In fact, no liquid can retain its qualities for a long time and not lose them. Therefore, replacement can be carried out in the region of 50-70 thousand km. mileage, while remembering that every 15 thousand km. it is necessary to carry out oil diagnostics (1 time / 5 years). If the transport is operated in difficult conditions, trailer operation and frequent loads, then the replacement period will be reduced by 1.5-2 times.

Oil volume in automatic transmission Mazda 6

With a complete fluid change, up to 8 liters are placed in the Mazda 6 Skyactive gearbox. oils. With partial - about 4 liters. If the replacement is carried out by the method of replacing the liquid on the service station apparatus, it will take about 12 liters. transmission oil.

What oil to fill in automatic transmission Mazda 6

To change the fluid, the manufacturer recommends using the original  MAZDA Original Oil ATF FZ.

Mazda Original Oil ATF FZ - 8300-77-246

This fluid was created specifically for use in SKYACTIVE-DRIVE automatic gearboxes. The energy-saving characteristics of this oil help to reduce fuel consumption during vehicle use and reliable operation under various loads in a wide range of outdoor temperatures.

Under no circumstances should oils of different types and manufacturers be mixed. Since it is impossible to completely drain all the oil from the gearbox during an independent change, fresh oil will definitely mix with the old one. This can lead to sedimentation, curdling of the oil itself and additives, which, in turn, can damage the gearbox.

This type of oil,  ATF FZ,  is only suitable for Skyactive gearboxes. This is a rather complicated unit, and it will be very difficult to find an appropriate replacement for branded oil. In addition, this box is quite difficult to repair and a mistake in choosing a transmission fluid can incur significant financial costs. Therefore, it is still better not to save money and use the original oil when replacing.

Gear oil functions:

  • lubrication of box parts and their protection against wear;
  • transmission of torque from the motor to the wheels;
  • cooling and heat dissipation;
  • reduction of mechanical load on the nodes;
  • keeping the engine clean.

Reasons for oil leakage from automatic transmission Mazda 6:

  • wear of gearbox seals;
  • wear of shaft surfaces;
  • the formation of play between the sealing element of the gearbox and the shaft;
  • gap of the input shaft of the gearbox;
  • lack of a sealant layer connecting parts of the box, for example, with an automatic transmission pan, crankcase or clutch housing;
  • loosening of the bolts securing the gearbox to the pallet or to other elements;
  • damage to the sealing layer in the joints between parts of the automatic transmission: sump, automatic transmission housing, crankcase, clutch housing.

Reasons for an oil change:

  • Dirty oil cannot remove heat well and lubricate the gearbox parts, which, as a result, leads to various kinds of vehicle gearbox malfunctions.
  • A very dirty liquid is an abrasive suspension. Under strong pressure, it begins to produce the result of sandblasting. The strong effect of the liquid leads to thinning of the walls of the valve body at the locations of the control valves and contributes to the occurrence of various leaks.
  • Under the influence of adverse climatic conditions, the oil gradually loses its qualities, the components of the automatic transmission do not cool well, quickly clog with metal chips, dirt, and eventually become unusable.

Oil change methods:

  • Complete automatic transmission oil change Mazda 6: the gearbox is completely flushed from mud deposits, the used old fluid is drained and replaced with a new one. More financially expensive procedure, but effective. During a complete replacement, about 16 liters of fluid are consumed.

Oil change automatic transmission Mazda 6

  • Partial oil change in automatic transmission Mazda 6: only half of the new oil is added to the previously filled old oil. This method is used with a small car mileage, when the oil still retains its properties and mixing both oils is quite acceptable. If the oil is in good condition, its color should be light, and the smell of burning should be completely absent. If you notice that the color has turned black and there is a burning smell, then the option of a partial oil change is completely excluded. During a partial oil change, about 4 liters of liquid are used.

When is a complete replacement required?

If the car's mileage is more than 100 thousand km, and the fluid in the gearbox has never been replaced, then a partial replacement may adversely affect the operation of the box, up to its failure. Only a complete replacement of the fluid and flushing of the automatic transmission can wash out various deposits that clog the oil channels, completely the entire system, and resume access to normal gearbox cooling.

Over time, the transmission fluid in the box loses its physical and chemical properties, gradually accumulating combustion and friction products. Therefore, a complete pumping out of the old fluid is necessary, and not a partial oil change.  Possible problems:

  • noise is heard during the operation of the box;
  • long and hard gear shifting;
  • increase in fuel consumption;
  • incorrect operation of electronic sensors;
  • accelerated wear of automatic transmission parts (bearings, bushings, sliding washers);
  • oil leakage at the junction between the engine and gearbox;
  • clogging of the oil filter and a decrease in its throughput;
  • additional load on the oil pump.

Independent determination of the need to change the oil Mazda 6:

1. Take a small blank white sheet of paper or a white cloth.

2. Pull out the oil dipstick and put a few drops on paper.

3. Assess the color of the liquid:

  • transparent blue tint - the liquid is in a normal state, and its replacement is not needed;
  • gray color, maybe still transparent or slightly cloudy - soon you will have to change the oil;
  • dark color, opaque, the smell of burning can be felt - a replacement is already needed.

Note:

  • For the correct implementation of these works, you need to follow all the instructions step by step.
  • It is most convenient to change the oil on a viewing hole or lift, on a motor warmed up to operating temperature.

Oil change automatic transmission Mazda 6. Work procedure:

1. Warm up the engine to a temperature of at least 70 ° C and drive a car for several kilometers. This will contribute to a more active draining of the old fluid from the automatic transmission.

2.  Place the machine on a lift, pit or overpass. Go down under the car and inspect its bottom.

Warning:

Be careful: there will still be some liquid in the middle of the box, and if you remove the tray, it may spill over you.

10.  Set aside the removed pallet.

Note:

It is not recommended to install the old filter back, as over time a sufficient amount of sediment and mechanical inclusions accumulate in its middle.

Note:

Top up the transmission fluid slowly: since the fluid quickly fills the system, it will be difficult to remove excess fluid back.

If too little or too much oil is added, this will adversely affect the performance of the automatic transmission.

28. After filling the fluid , start the engine and gradually move the automatic transmission selector to different positions from  P to D. Return selector to P mode .

29. The oil level in the Mazda 6 automatic transmission is measured with the engine running at idle, at a fluid temperature of 50 ° C. Therefore, start the engine, warm it up to operating temperature and shut it off.

30.  Measure the fluid level in the gearbox. It is determined by the marks on the dipstick. The level should be between the two marks MIN and MAX , in the middle.
