Note:
This article shows the Santa Fe diesel timing replacement.
1. Open the hood.
2. Mark the intercooler tubes with varnish and disconnect the tubes (you need to mark them so that you don’t confuse them during installation).
3. Disconnect the wiring harness, and also squeeze the ends of the clamp with pliers and disconnect the rear air hose from the intercooler.
4. Similarly, squeeze the ends of the clamp and disconnect the front air hose from the intercooler.
5. Unscrew the four intercooler mounting bolts and remove the intercooler (two bolts are not visible in the photo, they are located behind the intercooler and are shown by an arrow).
6. Turn off four bolts of fastening of a casing of the engine and remove a casing.
7. Remove the right engine mount as described in this article .
8. Remove the accessory belt as described in this article .

9. Turn off four bolts of a pulley of a driving belt and remove a pulley.
Drive belt pulley seat.
10. Remove the four bolts and remove the timing belt top cover.
11. Unscrew five bolts and remove the lower timing belt cover (three bolts are not visible in the photo, but their location is shown by the arrow).
12. Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt to set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke.
13. The pin should line up with the recess on the crankshaft.

mark on the crankshaft.
14. On the camshaft gear, the mark should be located horizontally at the level of the upper surface of the cylinder head.
Camshaft gear mark.
Note:
The piston of the 1st cylinder is set to the top dead center (TDC) position of the compression stroke so that during work, for example, replacing the Hyundai Santa Fe timing, the valve timing is not violated. If the valve timing is disturbed, the engine will not work normally.
Set the TDC according to the marks on the crankshaft pulley (when setting according to the marks on the crankshaft pulley, the piston of either the 1st or 4th cylinder can be in this position). After that, be sure to check the positions of the marks on the toothed pulleys of the camshafts (if you remove the cylinder head cover). If the marks do not match, it means that the installation of the gas distribution phases is violated (the piston of the 1st cylinder is not set to TDC). In this case, it is necessary to adjust the position of the shafts until the marks are aligned.
15. Turn off three bolts and remove one more arm of a support of the engine (for clarity it is shown on the removed engine).
16. Loosen the tension roller and remove the timing belt.
Removed timing belt Santa Fe diesel.
17. If necessary, unscrew and remove the timing belt idler. Install the new roller in the same way.
18. If necessary, unscrew and remove the timing belt tensioner.
Note:
The new tension roller is in a tensioned state and is fixed with a pin, it must be pulled out only after the belt is correctly installed.

19. Screw the new tension roller into place.
20. Install a new timing belt (do not touch the pin yet, it is shown by an arrow).
21. Check the marks on the pulleys.
mark on the crankshaft.
Camshaft gear mark.
Note:
If, after installing the belt, the mark on the crankshaft pulley has gone a tooth forward, then remove the belt, install the crankshaft pulley one tooth back (described in paragraphs 12-14) and repeat the installation process.
22. After checking the marks, remove the pin from the tensioner.
Note:
After removing the checks, the timing belt is tensioned by an automatic tensioner roller and does not need additional tension.
23. Turn the crankshaft pulley three times clockwise and again check the timing marks on the Santa Fe, as described in this article in paragraphs 12-14.
24. Install all removed parts in the reverse order of removal.
