Tool:
- Vehicle with a fully charged battery of sufficient capacity
- Auxiliary cables
Notes:
This article describes how to light a BMW X5 E53. With a discharged battery, the engine can be started with the battery of another vehicle using two auxiliary cables. In the same way, you can help start another car's engine. For this, only use auxiliary cables of sufficient cross-section with fully insulated terminals.
Make sure that the battery of the other car has a voltage of 12 V and approximately the same capacity (Ah) as your BMW X5 E53 battery. You can check this by looking at the battery label.
Warning:
Do not touch live parts while the engine is running: this can be fatal. To avoid injury or damage to both vehicles, carefully follow the steps below.
Do not use starting aerosols to start the engine.
Starting the car from an external power source, "lighting" BMW X5
1. Switch off the ignition of the assisting vehicle.
2. Switch off the working electrical consumers in both vehicles.
Warning:
Car bodies must not touch each other to avoid short circuits! This should also be taken into account in the case when a person can touch two adjacent cars at the same time.
3. Open the hood of the vehicle. Special leads are located on the left side of the engine compartment. Details on how to open the hood on a BMW X5 E53 are described in this article.
3. The positive terminal for starting from an external source is located under the hood on the shield of the engine compartment. Open the terminal cover for connecting an external power supply.
4. Attach one clamp of the "+" auxiliary cable to the positive terminal of the battery or the terminal for external power supply on the supplying vehicle .
Warning:
Make sure that the auxiliary cables do not get caught in rotating parts such as the fan.
5. Fasten the clamp of the "+" auxiliary cable to the positive terminal of the vehicle to be charged .
Warning:
To avoid sparking and personal injury, be sure to follow the sequence for connecting the auxiliary cables.
6. Install one clamp of the auxiliary cable "-" on the negative pole of the battery or on the ground of the engine or body of the supplying vehicle .
7. A special "weight" nut is located on the left fender of the engine compartment. Fasten the clamp of the auxiliary cable "-" on the special nut "earth" of the recharged vehicle .
Note:
If there is a need to start the car with a connection directly to the "+" terminal of the battery, open the trunk and access the battery as described in the article " Removing and installing the battery BMW X5 I E53 1999 - 2006 ".
Warning:
Under no circumstances should the black auxiliary cable be connected to the negative terminal of the battery of the vehicle being started. Otherwise, the resulting detonating gas can ignite if sparking. Risk of explosion!
8. Start the engine of the feeding vehicle and let it run for a few minutes at increased revs.
9. Start the engine of the started vehicle as usual. If unsuccessful, try again only after a few minutes, so that the discharged battery has the opportunity to replenish the charge.
10. When the vehicle to be started starts, run the engines of both vehicles for
a few minutes.
11. Disconnect the auxiliary cables in reverse order.
Warning:
When starting the car from an external source, always observe the polarity and the sequence of disconnection / connection. The wires are connected to special terminals or batteries in the following sequence: first "plus" (red), then "minus" (black). Disconnection is made in the reverse order: first "minus" (black), then "plus" (red).
