Notes:

The fluid filled in by Renault Duster manufacturer in the power steering hydraulic drive is designed for the entire life of the car. But at each scheduled maintenance, it is necessary to check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir, as well as in case of fluid leakage from the power steering hydraulic drive. In addition, if the steering efficiency is reduced or if extraneous noise or howling occurs when the steering wheel is rotated, the same check is performed. It is very important to determine the place of leakage as accurately as possible, after which, most likely, it will be necessary to replace a damaged or worn part.

For topping up, as well as when changing the fluid in the power steering system, it is necessary to use a working fluid recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

If you often top up the power steering fluid, then there are leaks somewhere, which should be repaired immediately after detection.

Fluid level should be checked on a cold engine.

To determine the location of the power steering fluid leak, the following technique is used:

  • with the engine off, wipe dry all the steering elements;
  • we check the fluid level in the hydraulic booster reservoir and, if necessary, bring it to normal;
  • we start the engine and rotate the steering wheel several times until it stops in the extreme left and extreme right positions;
  • We find the exact location of the leak and eliminate the cause.

1.  Park the vehicle on level ground, allow the engine to cool, and open the hood. The power steering reservoir is located in the central part of the engine compartment in the direction of vehicle movement (secured with a clamp on the cooling system fan housing).

2.  Visually check the fluid level in the reservoir. It must be between the  MAXI  (maximum) and  MINI  (minimum) marks on the body of the power steering expansion tank. When the engine is running, the fluid in the power steering system heats up, and the level in the reservoir may be slightly above the MAXI mark. If the level of the working fluid has dropped below the MINI mark, then it is necessary to add fluid.

3.  To top up the working fluid in the Renault Duster power steering reservoir, turn it counterclockwise and remove the reservoir cap.

4. Remove the strainer from the tank. If the filter is clogged, clean and rinse it.

5.  Add power steering fluid Renault Duster to the tank to the MAXI level.

Note:

Avoid overfilling the expansion tank with liquidThe Renault Duster fluid level must be kept within acceptable limits and not pour too much of it into the tank. Since the Renault Duster power steering fluid tends to expand during engine operation, an increase in pressure can lead to problems and costly repairs.

6.  Close the power steering reservoir cap tightly by turning it clockwise. Wipe up spilled liquid with a clean rag.

Notes:

Be sure to use the correct power steering fluid for your vehicle, as each power steering fluid requires a different viscosity (density) to properly power the steering system.

The manufacturer does not recommend using gear oil instead of steering fluid. There is a wide variety of fluid types to choose from and choosing the wrong kind can result in steering failure and failure of steering seals.

Useful advice:

Overheating of the oil often occurs when the steering wheel is fixed in the extreme position for a long time until it boils. The pressure in this case is the maximum. You should also not leave the car when parking for a long time with the steering wheel turned all the way out.

Method for checking the cleanliness of the power steering fluid

To check the purity of the power steering fluid, it is enough to pour a few drops of fluid from the power steering reservoir onto a clean, light, non-absorbent surface. The liquid must be clean, transparent, particles of suspension should not be visible in it, the color of the liquid must be unambiguous.

There are only three colors of power steering fluid: red, yellow and green. If the color of the liquid only slightly resembles one of the listed ones, this is an occasion to contact the service for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the power steering fluid.
