You will need: the same tools as for removing the timing chain (see "Removing and installing the timing chain"), cylinder head covers (see "Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket"), and a socket TORX M12, flat blade screwdriver, torque wrench, pliers, cylinder head bolts, cylinder head gasket, engine oil.

Toyota Corolla Cylinder Head Gasket Replacement

1. Reduce the pressure in the supply system (see “Reducing the pressure in the supply system”).

2. Disconnect a wire from the minus plug of the storage battery.

3. Remove the engine (see "Removing and installing the engine").

4. Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke (see "Setting the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke").

5. Remove the cylinder head cover (see "Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket").

6. Remove the camshafts of the gas distribution mechanism (see "Replacing the camshaft") and unscrew the two bolts indicated by the arrows.

7. Remove the pressure levers of the valves.

8. Remove the hydraulic lifters.

9. Pry with a screwdriver and remove the bed of the camshafts of the gas distribution mechanism.

10.  Loosen the tightening of the ten cylinder head bolts in the specified order.

11. Finally turn out bolts of fastening of a head. Remove the bolts.

12.  Remove the washers installed under the bolts.

WARNING:

Be sure to replace the block head bolts with new ones. Their reuse is not allowed.

13. Remove the cylinder head.

14. Remove its gasket.

15. Clean the mating surfaces of the head and cylinder block.

16. Check up a surface of the block of cylinders on absence of a buckling. To do this, place the ruler with an edge on the surface of the block, first in the middle along, across and diagonally, and then measure the gap between the surface of the block and the ruler with a feeler gauge. Grind the surface of the cylinder block if the gap is more than 0.05 mm.

17. Similarly check up a surface of a head of the block. Replace the cylinder head if the clearance is more than 0.05mm.

18. Establish a head of the block of cylinders in sequence, return to removal, taking into account the following:

– Remove from carving openings of bolts of fastening of a head of the block of cylinders oil or a cooling liquid which got there at removal of a head;

– be sure to install a new block head gasket, reuse of the gasket is not allowed;

- Replace the bolts with new ones;

- Lubricate the bolts with engine oil;

– Tighten the bolts on a cold engine in the order shown in four stages:

1st (preliminary settling of the gasket) - tighten the bolts to a torque of 20 N m (2 kgf m), then tighten by an angle of 100 ° ± 6 °. Wait 3 min;

2nd - loosen bolts 1 and 2, then tighten them again with a torque of 20 N m (2 kgf m) and tighten by an angle of 110°±6°;

3rd - loosen bolts 3, 4, 5 and 6, then tighten them again with a torque of 20 N m (2 kgf m) and tighten by an angle of 110°±6°;

4th - loosen bolts 7, 8, 9 and 10, then tighten them again with a torque of 20 N m (2 kgf m) and tighten by an angle of 110°±6°.

19. Establish all removed details and knots, in an order, the return to removal.

20. Adjust the tension of the timing chain (see "Removing and installing the timing chain") and the auxiliary drive belt (see "Checking, adjusting and replacing the tension of the auxiliary drive belt").

21. Fill in the coolant (see "Changing the coolant").
