Note:
According to the scheduled maintenance schedule, the iridium spark plugs in the R18A Honda Civic 4D and 5D engine must be replaced every 120 thousand kilometers. It is recommended to check every 15 thousand km, that is, every MOT.
To access the spark plugs on a Honda Civic, you will first need to remove the ignition coils.
Replacing spark plugs on a Honda Civic
1. Raise the hood and secure it with the stop.
2. With a 10 mm wrench, disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
3. To prevent debris from entering the cylinders or spark plug wells, thoroughly clean the top of the engine with a rag.
4. Squeeze a clamp and disconnect a block from the ignition coil.
5. Using a 10 mm wrench, remove the coil mounting bolt.
6. Remove the ignition coil from the well of the cylinder head.
7. Use a 16 mm spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug.
8. Pull the Honda Civic spark plug out of the spark plug well.
9. Inspect the candle and evaluate its condition in appearance.
If the electrode end of an old Honda Civic spark plug looks ash white, the spark plugs may have been exposed to high temperatures such as overheating, or they are out of the heat range for your driving conditions or environment.
If the old spark plugs are dark gray or covered in black soot, the engine may be burning oil and should be checked by a professional mechanic.
10. If the candle looks good, check the gap between the spark plug electrodes on the Honda Civic with a special round probe. It should be 1.00-1.1 mm.
11. If the gap differs from the specified value, adjust it by bending the side electrode.
12. Similarly, remove and inspect the remaining spark plugs.
13. Replace Honda Civic spark plugs with new ones.
Note:
When replacing spark plugs with new ones, install spark plugs with characteristics recommended by the manufacturer.
14. Install new Honda Civic spark plugs in the spark plug wells and tighten to 25 N•m.
15. Install the ignition coils in the reverse order of removal.
