Tool:
- Charger
- Open-end spanner 10 mm (if necessary)
- Open-end spanner 13 mm (if necessary)
Parts and consumables:
- Covers for insulating wires
- Rubber gloves (if necessary)
- Rechargeable battery of suitable capacity (if necessary, replace)
Notes:
The manufacturer recommends charging the battery only through the terminals in the engine compartment. However, this method is not always suitable. In a situation where it is also necessary to check the storage battery (accumulator), remove it / recharge it separately, you need to get access directly to the battery.
A warning:
Before charging the battery, first check the voltage at rest without removing it from the vehicle. If the voltage is 10 V or less, there may be a malfunction of one or more cells or damage to the battery as a whole. In this case, the battery must be removed so that gases emitted during charging do not damage the nearby equipment. An attempt should be made to repair defective battery cells with low charging current. How to remove the battery on the BMW X5 E53 is described in this article.
Charging the battery BMW X5
1. Switch off the car ignition. You can recharge the battery on a car only when the engine is off.
2. Open the hood of the vehicle. Special leads are located on the left side of the engine compartment. Details on how to open the hood on a BMW X5 E53 are described in this article.
3. The positive terminal for charging is located under the bonnet on the shield of the engine compartment. Open the terminal cover for connecting an external power supply.
4. Attach the positive clamp of the charger cable to the positive terminal of the vehicle.
5. A special "weight" nut is located on the left fender of the engine compartment. Fasten the negative clamp of the charger cable to the special "earth" nut.
6. Charge the battery to the required standard parameters and disconnect the charger from the special terminals under the hood.
7. If there is a need to charge the battery directly through its terminals, open the trunk and access the battery as described in the article " Removing and installing the battery in BMW X5 I E53 1999 - 2006 ".
Note:
If you only plan to check and charge the BMW X5 battery without removing it, then you can limit yourself only to removing the steel dome to hold the spare wheel.
8. Disconnect first the negative wire (black) and then the positive wire (red) from the battery.
Note:
After disconnecting the wires, it is recommended to insulate them using special covers or simple rubber gloves made of thick rubber.
9. Attach the positive clamp of the charger cable to the positive terminal of the battery, and then the negative clamp of the charger cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
10. If a complete check of the BMW X5 battery with measurement of the electrolyte density and subsequent charging or battery replacement is required, remove all other parts and dismantle the battery.
11. Charge the battery or replace it with a new one.
A warning:
When working with the battery, always observe the polarity and the order of disconnection / connection. The wires are connected to special terminals or battery in the following sequence: first "plus" (red), then "minus" (black). Disconnection is made in reverse order: first "minus" (black), then "plus" (red).
