Remove the starter housing assembly with the starter winding and armature from the traction relay housing.

Turn away a nut and disconnect the plug of a wire from an output of the traction relay ( fig. 7.41 ).

Turn away two bolts of fastening of a cover of a starter ( fig. 7.42 ).
Remove the drive side starter cover.
Pull the starter housing complete with the stator winding and armature from the traction relay housing.

Using thin-nosed pliers, remove the spring ring ( Fig. 7.43 ).

Turn away two coupling bolts of fastening of a cover of a starter from the switchboard ( fig. 7.44 ).
Remove the cover from the side of the switch.

Using a magnetic rod, remove the steel ball from the hole in the overrunning clutch shaft ( Fig. 7.45 ).

Using a screwdriver, depress the brush spring and disconnect the brush from the brush holder. Disconnect the four brushes and remove the brush holder ( Fig. 7.46 ).
Make sure the positive (+) wire is not shorted to ground.
Remove the anchor from the starter housing.
