Parts and consumables:

  • Self-locking nut

Suspension strut components Audi A4

Elements of the suspension strut:

  •    1 - collar nut, 50Nm, self-locking;
  •    2 - shock absorber support;
  •    3 - washer;
  •    4 - support;
  •    5 - helical spring;
  •    6 - additional spring;
  •    7 - protective cover;
  •    8 - protective cap;
  •    9 - lower spring support;
  •    10 - bottom spring plate;
  •    11 - shock absorber.

1 . Remove the shock absorber. The suspension strut can only be disassembled using a special tool.

Note:

The shock strut spring is compressed with a large force. To remove the shock absorber, it is necessary to compress the spring with a special tool.

Warning:

Never remove the shock absorber unless the spring is securely compressed. When installing the spring compressor, make sure that the coils of the spring are securely gripped so that the tool cannot slip. The spring is compressed with great force. Use only reliable tools. Never tie the spring with wire. Danger of accident!

2 . Clamp the tip spring in a vise.

3 . Compress the spring with a suitable tool. HUNDRED AUDI apply VAG 1752/1 tool for this purpose ( 1 ).

4 . When compressing, follow the correct position of the spring in the fixture (arrow in the accompanying illustration). ( 1 ) - a device for compression, ( 2 ) - a support for the coils of the spring.

5 . Compress the spring so that the top plate is released.

6 . Loosen the collared nut of the stem. At the same time, keep the stem from turning with a socket wrench for an internal hexagon. This requires a special tool (HAZET 4910/13 or AUDI-T10001/7, T10001/11 and T10001/3).

8 . Remove the compressed spring along with the compression tool.

9 . Remove the guard ( 1 ) and lower spring seat ( 2 ).

10 . Mark the position of the bottom plate in relation to the damper ( 4 ).

11 . Detach the plate ( 3 ) with a plastic hammer and remove upwards.

12 . To install the  front suspension shock absorber, clamp a new shock absorber cartridge with a tip in the suspension strut mounts or in a vise with pads.

Note:

There are springs of different tolerance groups. Only springs with the same color mark should be used. It is recommended to replace springs and shock absorbers in pairs, i.e. on both sides of the car.

13 . Transfer the label from the old one to the new shock absorber. Carefully, using a plastic hammer, install the lower spring plate until it stops on the shock absorber. At the same time, make sure that the mark on the plate coincides with the mark on the shock absorber.

14 . The position of the lower plate is determined by the dimensions indicated in the illustration.

15 . The cut of the plate ( arrow ) must provide access to the body.

16 . Reinstall the lower spring seat and guard.

17 . Reinstall the compressed spring with the compression tool. The end of the coil of the spring must be in contact with the stop.

18 . Install the damper mount with the upper spring seat on the compressed spring so that the spring seat rests on the end of the spring coil ( arrow ). Deviation within ± 2° is allowed.

19 . Install the washer and shock absorber support.

Note:

Make sure that the end of the spring rests against the stop of the upper spring seat.

20 . Tighten the new collar nut with the special tool to 50Nm. Don't decompress the spring just yet.

21 . Press the suspension strut vertically with the compression tool VAG 1752/2.

22 . Release the lower locking lever and rotate the upper spring plate so that the spring strut support scale is at 7°.

24 . Lock the lock lever.

25 . The lever of the spring support of the VAG 1752/2 tool ( arrow ) must coincide with the center of the support.

26 . Carefully loosen the spring compressor and remove it.

27 . Check adjustment. If necessary, repeat the procedure.

28 . Reinstall the suspension strut, refer to the relevant section .
