Note:

Before changing the tie rod on a Nissan X-Trail, you will first need to remove the tie rod end.

The right and left tie rods are replaced in the same way.

It is best to work  on a lift.  But if this is not possible, the work can be done on a car mounted on supports.

1.  Put the car on a lift.

2.  If this is not possible brake the rear wheels with a parking brake and install wheel chocks under them.

3.  Use a 21mm Allen wrench or socket to loosen all wheel nuts approximately one-half turn.

4.  Raise and support the front of the vehicle on the side of the Nissan X-Trail tie rod being replaced.

5.  Finally turn away nuts of fastening, and remove a wheel.

6.  Use a metal brush to remove rust and dirt from the threaded connections of the tip and rod. Treat them also with a penetrating lubricant such as WD-40.

7.  Measure with a tape measure and record the distance from the center of the ball joint to the start of the hex section of the Nissan X-Trail tie rod.

8.  Fix the steering tip with a 19 mm wrench. Using a 22 mm wrench, turn the tip locknut a few turns.

9.  Using a 14 mm box wrench, unscrew the pin retaining nut until it turns freely by hand.

Useful advice:

If necessary, hold your finger with a Torx T27 wrench.

10.  Remove the nut.

11.  Install a special ball joint puller.

12.  Press the pivot pin out of the steering knuckle arm.

13.  While holding the tie rod with a 13 mm wrench, unscrew and remove the tie rod end with a 19 mm wrench.

1.  Loosen with pliers, squeeze the bent ears and remove the outer boot clamp.

2.  Snip the lock of the inner collar of the Nissan X-Trail tie-rod boot with side cutters.

3.  Pull the boot towards you and remove it from the tie rod.

4. Using a 32 mm spanner, unscrew the tie rod joint.

5. Remove steering draft and examine its condition. 

6. If necessary, replace the Nissan X-Trail tie rod with a new one.

Note:

If you did not remove the tie rod on a Nissan X-Trail to replace it, clean the old tie rod from dirt and old grease, and put in a fresh one.

7. Install the new tie rod in place.

8. Apply fresh grease to the tie rod joints.

9. Check up a condition of anther of steering draft. If cracks are found on it, replace the boot with a new one.

10.  Establish a boot on steering draft and fix it with new fixing collars.

11.  Screw a tip on steering draft.

12.  Assemble the Nissan X-Trail tie rod parts so that the distance from the center of the hinge to the start of the hexagonal tie rod end is the same as with the old tie rod end removed.

13.  If necessary, replace the Nissan X-Trail tie rod on the other side of the vehicle.

14.  Check and adjust the wheel alignment at a service station.
