If traces of oil leakage through the crankshaft seals are found, first check if the crankcase ventilation system is clogged and if its hoses are pinched, if necessary, troubleshoot. If the oil leak does not stop, replace the seals.
A sign of the need to replace the front crankshaft oil seal for an Opel Astra is an oil leak through its edge. In this case, the oil is sprayed by the rotating crankshaft pulley, as a result of which the entire front of the engine and the timing belt are oiled.
The reasons for oiling the clutch discs may be a leak in the input shaft oil seal of the gearbox or the rear crankshaft oil seal.
Engine and transmission oils have a different smell, so with a certain skill it can be used to determine which of the oil seals is defective.
Useful advice
There is another way to determine the type of oil. Drop oil into water poured into a vessel with a thin layer (possibly in a puddle). Gear oil will spread over the entire surface of the water in the form of an iridescent film, and engine oil will remain in the form of a drop similar to a lentil grain.
You will need: all the tools needed to remove the timing belt (see Replacing the timing belt for Z 16 XER, Z 18 XER, Z 20 LER and Z 20 LEH engines), gearbox (see Removing and installing gearbox) , clutch (see Removing and installing the clutch), flywheel (see Removing, troubleshooting and installing the flywheel), as well as a screwdriver and a hammer.
To replace the front crankshaft oil seal, do the following.
1. Disconnect a wire from the minus plug of the storage battery.
2. Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke (see Setting the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke).
3. Remove the timing belt (see "Replacing the timing belt for Z 16 XER, Z 18 XER, Z 20 LER and Z 20 LEH engines"), camshafts (see Removal, troubleshooting and installation of camshafts).
4. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
5. Remove the key from the crankshaft nose groove.
6. Using a screwdriver or wire hook, remove the oil seal from the oil pump housing.
7. Lubricate the working edge of the new oil seal with engine oil, install it in the oil pump housing, orienting the working edge inside the engine, and press the oil seal into the pump housing until it stops with a mandrel. As a mandrel, you can use a head from a tool kit of a suitable size or an old oil seal.
8. Install all removed parts and components of the gas distribution mechanism in the reverse order of removal.
9. Adjust the tension of the timing belt (see "Replacing the timing belt of the Z 16 XER, Z 18 XER, Z 20 LER and Z 20 LEH engines") and the auxiliary drive belt.
To replace the crankshaft rear oil seal, perform the following steps.
1. Remove a transmission (see. "Removal and installation of a transmission").
2. Remove the clutch (see "Removing and installing the clutch").
3. Remove the flywheel (see "Removal, troubleshooting and installation of the flywheel").
4. Remove the oil pan.
5. Turn out the screw of fastening of the gauge of provision of a cranked shaft...
6. ... and remove the sensor.
7. Remove the setting disk of the crankshaft position sensor.
8. Turn out two bolts of fastening of a cover of the main bearing of a cranked shaft...
9. ... and remove the cover.
10. Take out from the holder a back epiploon of a cranked shaft.
11. Grease a working edge of a new epiploon with engine oil.
12. To avoid damaging the rear oil seal lip, install the oil seal using an appropriately sized drift.
13. Establish the removed knots and details in an order, the return to removal.
Note
- When installing the flywheel on the Opel Astra, lubricate the threaded part of the bolts of its fastening with an anaerobic thread locker and tighten them evenly crosswise.
