Replacing the rear shock absorbers on the Mitsubishi Outlander XL

1. Install the car on a pit or overpass. If this is not possible, lift with a jack. Raise the lower arm with a second jack.

Note:

For more comfortable access to the lower shock absorber mounting bolt, it is advisable to remove the rear wheel.

2. In the luggage compartment, pry and remove the first plastic plug with a plastic spatula.

3. Also remove the second plug.

4. Using a 14 mm wrench, unscrew the upper nut securing the Mitsubishi Outlander XL shock absorber support.

5. Also with a 14 mm wrench, unscrew the second nut on the other side.

6. With a  17 mm head, unscrew the lower shock absorber mounting bolt. 

7. Remove and pull out the rear shock absorber.

8. Replace the Mitsubishi Outlander XL rear shock absorber with a new one.

9. Check it by pushing the stem down.

10. Put on a new shock absorber anther.

11. Replace the rubber bands and install the top support.

12. Install the rear shock absorber on the Mitsubishi Outlander XL in the reverse order of removal.
