Notes
No oil change is required (just topping up) during the entire service life of the gearbox.
Fill the manual or automatic transmission with oil or working fluid, respectively, only recommended by the manufacturer (the type and brand of oil filled in the transmission of your Opel can be found from the dealer that sold the car).
Proceed as follows to check the oil level in the manual transmission:
1. Place the Opel Astra on a lift or a viewing ditch.
2. Remove the transmission inspection hole plug located on the transmission housing next to the left inner drive joint.

3. If the oil level is too low (you cannot control it with your finger), remove the oil filler plug located on the top of the shift housing and fill with a syringe.
The fluid level in an automatic transmission can be checked both in a cold and in a transmission warmed up to operating temperature. Check the level using a level indicator (dipstick) (Fig. 1) inserted into the crankcase at the top of the box. On the A side of the dipstick there are marks for checking the level in the cold box, and on the B side - in the heated one.

Figure: 1. Indicator (dipstick) for checking the level of the working fluid in an automatic transmission: A - side of the indicator for checking the level in a cold gearbox; B - the side of the gauge for checking the level in the transmission warmed up to operating temperature.
To check the level in a cold gearbox, remove the dipstick and on the side marked "+ 20 ° C" look at the mark covered by the oil film. The level should be between the "MIN" mark and the upper mark on the dipstick.
Before checking the level in a warm transmission, do the following:
1. Warm up the working fluid in the gearbox to operating temperature (70-80 ° C) by making a short trip.
2. Park the car on a level horizontal surface and brake with the parking brake.
3. Pressing the lock button on the selector lever and on the brake pedal, alternately move the selector lever to all positions from "P" (park) to "D" (drive forward) with short stops in each position to fill the converter and hydraulic system with fluid. ... Then put the selector lever in the "N" (neutral) position. Release the brake pedal and stop the engine.
4. Remove the dipstick and on the side marked "+ 80 ° C" see what mark is covered by the oil film. The level should be between the "MAX" mark and the lower mark on the dipstick. If the level of the working fluid is too low, add it through the special hole on the gearbox housing. The procedure for changing the working fluid in an automatic transmission is described in detail in section. "Transmission".
