Tools:
- L-shaped socket wrench 10 mm
- Phillips screwdriver, medium
Parts and consumables:
- Power steering fluid for replacement (VAG Power Steering Fluid G004, or equivalents)
Warning:
Check the fluid level in the power steering hydraulic system reservoir when the engine is cold.
Do not reuse fluid from the system: it is contaminated, saturated with air and moisture.
Use only fluids recommended by the manufacturer.
1. Disconnect a wire from the plug "-" of the storage battery. On some vehicles, the battery holder (larger) covers the cover of the receiver. In this case, remove the battery and its holder. This operation is described in more detail here .
2. If necessary, remove the air filter as described for petrol or diesel engines.
3. Unscrew the cover 9 of the receiver and wipe the liquid level indicator mounted on the plug with a clean cloth.
4. Screw the cover up to the stop and unscrew it again. The fluid level must be between the top A and bottom B marks on the gauge.
Warning:
Do not use the MIN and MAX marks on the receiver to control the liquid level.
5. If the fluid level is below mark B, add working fluid to the receiver, after checking the tightness of the hydraulic system.
6. If the liquid level exceeds mark A, it is necessary to remove the excess liquid. Keep in mind that when the engine is hot (engine coolant temperature is above 50°C), the power steering hydraulic fluid level is above mark A.
7. If the liquid level is normal, has a normal consistency and according to the regulations it does not need to be replaced, then you can assemble all the parts in the reverse order.
8. If the working fluid has lost its original properties, thickened, then it must be drained or sucked out of the receiver.
9. This example describes the process of removing old fluid by suction. To do this, you need to take a large syringe of more than 100 ml and a piece of hose of a suitable diameter (you can use a dropper).
9. It is necessary to pump out approximately 500 ml of liquid.
10. Fill in a new working fluid in a volume of 500 ml and turn the steering wheel.
Warning:
If the old working fluid was in a very bad condition, it is recommended that after the first refueling, drain the newly filled fluid again, and then refill the receiver with new fluid to the required level.
11. Assemble all parts in reverse order.
