Alignment marks on the toothed pulleys of the engine camshaft drive:
1 - marks on the camshaft pulley;
2 – a gear pulley of a drive of a camshaft;
3 - marks on the crankshaft pulley;
4 – a gear pulley of a cranked shaft;
5 – a gear pulley of a drive of the oil pump;
6 - marks on the oil pump drive pulley.
The piston of the 1st cylinder is set to the TDC (top dead center) position of the compression stroke so that when carrying out work related to the removal of the camshaft drive belt, the valve timing is not disturbed. If the valve timing is disturbed, the engine will not work normally.
Set the TDC according to the mark on the camshaft pulley (when installing according to the marks on the crankshaft pulley, the piston of either the 1st or 4th cylinder can be in this position). After that, be sure to check that the marks on the crankshaft toothed pulley match (if the alternator drive pulley is removed). If the marks on the crankshaft pulley do not match, then the installation of the gas distribution phases is violated (the piston of the 1st cylinder is not set to TDC).
In this case, it is necessary to remove the camshaft drive belt and turn the crankshaft until the marks are aligned.
Useful advice
Since it is inconvenient to turn the crankshaft by the pulley mounting bolt to it, you can do this in one of the following ways
1. Engage any gear (preferably IV) and slowly roll the car until the marks are aligned.
2. Engage any gear and hang one of the front wheels. Then turn the suspended wheel until the marks are aligned.
The mark on the toothed pulley 3 of the camshaft must be aligned with the slot on the rear cover of the timing gear drive.
The mark on the toothed pulley 4 of the crankshaft must be aligned with the mark on the cylinder block. It becomes visible after removing the alternator drive pulley and power steering pump.
The triangular mark on the toothed pulley must align with the boss on the oil pump housing. In addition, marks are applied on the edge of the crankshaft pulley for driving auxiliary units and on the lower front cover of the timing belt (marks are visible without disassembling the components).
