Notes:
Replacing the Outlander XL engine valve cover gasket should become a familiar procedure, especially if the car is actively used. It is recommended to replace in the following cases:
- when traces of oil appear outside along the line connecting the cover and the block head;
- during current or overhaul of the engine;
- if the head cover is removed for maintenance or repair of the timing.
This article shows you how to replace the valve cover gasket for 4B12 and 4B11 engines. There are no differences in replacing the gaskets of these engines.
Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket for engines Mitsubishi Outlander XL
1. Remove the decorative engine shroud as described here .

2. Remove the ignition coils as described here .


3. Disconnect the hose 1 from the positive crankcase ventilation valve and the ventilation hose 2 to the resonator from the cylinder head cover.

4. Loosen the cylinder head cover mounting bolts in the sequence shown in the photo below.


5. Unscrew the bolts securing the valve cover completely and remove it.

6. Now the Outlander XL valve cover gasket can be removed.


7. Remove any old sealant residue from the timing chain cover and cylinder head gasket that contacts the cylinder head cover gasket.

8. Degrease the sealant application surface and use a cleaner to remove any dirt on the inside of the valve cover.

9. Apply the specified 4mm diameter sealant to the joint between the timing chain cover and the cylinder head, as shown in the illustration below.

10. Install the gasket with the cylinder head cover in place within 3 minutes after applying the sealant.

11. Pre-tighten the mounting bolts in the sequence shown in the figure below. The tightening torque is 3.0 ± 1.0 Nm.

12. Finally, tighten the bolts to a nominal torque of 5.0 ± 0.5 N · m in the sequence shown in the figure above.
Note:
After installing the cylinder head cover, wait at least two hours before filling oil and / or starting the engine.
13. Install the ignition coils in the spark plug wells and connect the crankcase ventilation hoses to the valve cover.

14. Install the valve cover plate and decorative cover on the Outlander XL engine.
