We remove the starter for repair or replacement when it fails, as well as when removing the gearbox.
We perform work on a viewing ditch or overpass.
Disconnect the wire terminal from the "negative" terminal of the battery.
We remove the protection of the power unit (see Removing the protection of the power unit).
We remove the air intake with the resonator assembly (see Removing the air intake and air path resonator).
In the engine compartment.

Using the “13” head, unscrew the two starter mounting bolts.

We take out the bolts.

The location of the starter mounting bolts (for clarity, shown on the removed gearbox): 1 - upper bolts (in the engine compartment); 2 – the lower bolt (from below the car).
Under the car...

... with the “8” head, we unscrew the nut that fastens the wire tip to the control output of the traction relay.
The nut is attached to the end of the wire.

Remove the wire end from the relay output.

With a “10” head, we unscrew the nut that secures the tip of the wire connected to the “positive” terminal of the battery.
The nut is attached to the end of the wire.

We remove the wire tip from the contact bolt of the traction relay.

Using the “13” head, unscrew the lower starter mounting bolt.

We remove the starter.
To assess the health of the starter drive.

Turn the starter drive gear with a screwdriver.
The gear must rotate in one direction with the drive shaft, and in the other direction on the drive shaft.
Otherwise, the drive must be replaced.

Use a screwdriver to move the gear along the shaft.
The gear should move easily, without jamming, along the shaft.
If the gear sticks on the shaft, the drive must be replaced.
To check the starter, we connect the “positive” terminal of the battery with the upper contact bolt of the traction relay, and the “negative” terminal with the starter housing, with wires for “lighting up”.

Using a screwdriver, we bridge the upper contact bolt and the control output of the traction relay.

When carrying out this operation, care must be taken, since sparking is possible in the area of \u200b\u200bclosing the terminals.
Do not touch the "ground" with a screwdriver at the moment of closing the terminals.

This should move the drive gear and turn on the starter motor.
Otherwise, we check the electric motor and the starter traction relay.
To test the motor.

We connect with wires the “positive” terminal of the battery with the lower contact bolt of the traction relay, and the “negative” terminal with the starter housing.
In this case, the motor shaft must rotate.
Otherwise, the motor is defective.
To test the traction relay.

We connect the "positive" output of the battery with the control output of the traction relay, and the "negative" output - with the starter housing.
In this case, the drive gear should move forward.
If this does not happen, the traction relay is faulty.
When installing the starter, first we put the wire ends on the contact bolt and the control output of the traction relay and bait the nuts for their fastening.
We install the starter in place and bait the three bolts of its fastening.

The mounting sleeve 1 in the clutch housing must enter the hole 2 of the starter front cover (for clarity, shown on the removed gearbox).
After that, we finally tighten the starter mounting bolts and the nuts for attaching the wire ends.
Install the removed parts in reverse order.
