Notes:

This article describes the process of replacing parts of the rear brake drum mechanism, which is found on the so-called. "American" versions of the Mitsubishi Outlander.

1.  Loosen the rear wheel bolts. Raise the car with a jack, place it on reliable supports. Place a stop (shoe) under the diagonal front wheel to be removed.

2. Turn off bolts up to the end and remove a wheel. Clean the brake drum of dirt and rust with a wire brush.

3.  Remove the vehicle from the handbrake if it was previously activated. Screw M8 bolts alternately and evenly into two free holes on the drum. The drum can be moved with a hammer.

4.  Remove the drum from the rails.

5.  Remove the lower spring connecting the pads to each other.

6.  Use pliers to remove the spring fasteners of the pads to the brake plate.

7. Disconnect the handbrake cable located at the bottom of the brake mechanism.

8.  Remove pads together with top springs and release mechanism. Do this carefully so as not to damage the anthers of the brake cylinder (if it is not planned to be replaced).

9.  Examine the brake cylinder. If there are liquid leaks on it, then it is better to replace it. If you plan to replace the brake cylinder, then it is necessary to remove the cap for bleeding the brake system, which is located on the back of the cylinder.

10.  Turn off in the same place, behind, a brake pipe and two bolts of fastening of the cylinder. Plug the tube with a suitable plug so that brake fluid does not spill out.

11. Remove the brake cylinder and replace it with a new one.

12. Fasten the new cylinder with bolts and connect the brake pipe to it.

13.  Clean any parts that you plan to install again. Replace the pads with new ones if the old ones have worn down to the minimum tolerances. To do this, you need to measure the thickness of the working surface of each block in several places. The thickness limit is 1.0 mm.

If the pads are out of specification, fit new brake pads for both sides. Replacing pads on only one axle wheel is not allowed.

14. Move the parking brake lever to a new block and fix it with a bracket.

15. Disassemble, clean and grease the adjustment mechanism located under the top spring. Lubricate the contact points of the rubbing surfaces (an approximate diagram is given at the end of the article). Assemble all pads and springs in reverse order. You can use the mechanism on the other wheel as a good example of assembly. Do not confuse the springs in places, arrange them as it was originally.

16. Inspect the brake drum. If damage or cracks are found, replace the drum. Also, measure the inner diameter of the brake drum, which should not exceed 230.6 mm. If this value is reached, then the drum must also be replaced with a new one.

17.  Install the brake drum.

18.  If the wheel cylinder was removed during disassembly, remove air from the rear brake drive circuit (bleed the brakes).

19. Install and secure the wheel.

20. Through the technological hole in the brake drum, with a flat screwdriver, adjust the discrepancy between the pads so that the wheel spins without resistance, and the parking brake lever rises with due effort. The pads on both sides are separated by rotating the adjusting gear upwards, and brought together by rotating downwards. On the left is a straight thread, on the right is a reverse thread.

21. Check the operation of the brakes in a safe environment, as well as the hand brake of the Mitsubishi Outlander. If after driving you notice that the brake drum is very hot, this may be a sign that the pads were too far apart when adjusting. Adjust the pads by slightly bringing them together. Overheating should be gone.
